Recipe by Shilpa Shetty: How to make hummus, perfect for vegetarians
Actress Shilpa Shetty is expert in cooking healthy food. In one of her recent videos, she shared an interesting variation of hummus, which apart from being healthy is also the hot favourite of many.
Hummus is a vegetarian dip that is usually paired with pita bread, chips or vegetables. 100 grams of hummus has 166 calories and decent amounts of protein, fat, carbs, fibre, manganese, copper, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, vitamin B6, potassium and thiamine.
Hummus is a great source of protein providing 7.9 grams per serving. As consuming enough protein is essential for optimal recovery, growth and healthy immune function, hummus is an excellent option for vegetarians and vegans.
How it is prepared
The dip is traditionally made with boiled chickpeas and is flavoured with olive oil, garlic powder, lemon juice and sesame seeds. Hummus is a nutritious dip as the main ingredient used is chickpea that is abundantly rich in protein. It can even be used as a sandwich spread. You can make your hummus even healthier by adding the ingredients of your choice.
Shilpa Shetty's hummus recipe
Shilpa gave the traditional hummus her touch by using moong dal/sabut moong/whole green moong instead of using chickpeas. The lentil is commonly available in every Indian kitchen and is also called chhilke wali moong daal.
How to make
Boil and soak moong dal/chickpea and then grind it to a fine paste along with garlic and sesame seeds. Once a fine paste is made you can add olive oil, salt, chilli powder and lemon juice to it.
This variation of hummus is simple but adds more fibre, vitamin and protein to your diet. Though both chickpea and lentils are good sources of B-vitamins and are low in calories. Olive oil and sesame seeds are a source of healthy fats.

Moong dal hummus has 304 calories per serving, so, you should be careful if you are on a low-calorie diet.
