Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar: Trailer Brings the 26/11 Kasab Trial to the Big Screen

Rajkummar Rao is stepping into another challenging real-life
character with Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam, and the
recently released trailer has already drawn attention for its intense courtroom
setting. Instead of focusing primarily on the events of the 26/11 Mumbai
attacks themselves, the film turns the spotlight toward the legal battle that
followed, with Rao portraying public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.
Directed by Avinash Arun and produced by Dinesh Vijan under
Maddock Films, Prahaar explores Nikam’s role in the high-profile
prosecution of Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving attacker captured during the
2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on
October 16, 2026.
Rajkummar Rao Takes on a New Challenge
Known for moving between intense dramas, biographical roles,
and character-driven films, Rajkummar Rao once again takes on a personality who
is already familiar to the Indian public.
In the trailer, Rao appears as Ujjwal Nikam in courtroom
scenes that focus on evidence, witnesses, legal arguments, and the pressure
surrounding one of the country's most closely followed criminal trials. The
performance appears to rely heavily on controlled expressions and courtroom
dialogue rather than conventional action sequences.
The actor has also spoken about his connection to the events
of 26/11. At the trailer launch, Rao recalled having moved to Mumbai only a few
months before the attacks and described watching the events unfold on
television with his roommates.
A Courtroom Story at the Centre
One of the most notable aspects of the trailer is its focus
on the legal proceedings following the attacks. A major moment shown involves
Kasab's claim that he was 17 years old, bringing the question of his age and
the legal process surrounding the trial into the narrative.
The trailer also presents the difficult task of building a
case through evidence and witness testimony. This gives Prahaar a
different perspective from films that primarily recreate the attack itself.
According to recent comments from Ujjwal Nikam, the
filmmakers have aimed to keep the focus on terrorism, evidence, victims, and
the judicial process rather than sensationalising the case.
A Strong Supporting Cast
Rao is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Wamiqa
Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sikandar Kher, Ashish Vidyarthi, Lalit Prabhakar, and
Ritvik Sahore. Wamiqa Gabbi plays Rao's wife, while the trailer also gives
glimpses of Sikandar Kher and Jaideep Ahlawat in important roles.
The combination of an experienced cast and a
courtroom-driven story adds another layer of interest to the project.
Why the Trailer Has Created Buzz
The interest around Prahaar comes from several
factors. It brings a significant real-life legal case to the big screen,
features Rajkummar Rao in a role that requires a different kind of intensity,
and places the courtroom rather than the battlefield at the heart of the story.
The subject also carries considerable historical and
emotional weight because it deals with the judicial aftermath of the 2008
Mumbai attacks. That makes the filmmakers' approach to the real events
particularly important.
At the same time, it is worth remembering that Prahaar
is a dramatized film. While it draws from real people and events, audiences
will see those events through the filmmakers' interpretation and storytelling
choices.
What to Expect from Prahaar
With its serious subject, courtroom setting, and focus on
Ujjwal Nikam's role in the Kasab trial, Prahaar is shaping up as a
departure from lighter mainstream Bollywood entertainment.
Rajkummar Rao's portrayal is likely to be one of the film's
central talking points, while the courtroom exchanges shown in the trailer
suggest that the film will place considerable emphasis on dialogue and legal
strategy.
As Prahaar heads toward its October 16 theatrical
release, the trailer has given audiences their first substantial look at a film
that revisits a significant chapter in India's recent legal and social
history—this time through the eyes of the prosecutor who stood at the centre of
the courtroom battle.
