Why is Lord Shiva worshipped for Sixteen Mondays?

Many years later, the King`s daughter found out that her husband had been chosen for the marriage after he had performed the vow of Lord Shiva`s worship for sixteen Mondays. She was eager to have a son who could become a king and decided to perform the same. Lord Shiva was impressed with her devotion and blessed them the couple with a son.
