Bollywood Box Office 2026: Biggest Hits and Flops So Far

Bollywood has
had a roller-coaster ride at the box office in 2026. Some films have turned
into massive crowd-pullers, while several highly anticipated releases have
struggled to recover their costs. What makes this year especially interesting
is the sharp contrast between huge franchise films, surprise successes and
movies that failed despite strong star power. With the year still having months
to go, the box office story is already full of twists.
Dhurandhar 2
Leads the Race
There is no question about the biggest Hindi hit of 2026 so far: Dhurandhar 2:
The Revenge. The Ranveer Singh-led action drama has completely dominated the
box office. According to current trade tracking, the film has crossed ₹1,100
crore in India and is comfortably ahead of every other Hindi release this year.
Its success has been particularly striking because it continued the momentum
created by the first Dhurandhar and turned the franchise into a major
theatrical brand.
The film's scale, action, strong word of mouth and huge fan interest have
helped it become the year's defining box-office phenomenon. Reports also
indicate that Dhurandhar 2 contributed more than half of Bollywood's theatrical earnings during the first half of the year, showing just how extraordinary its
run has been.
Border 2 and
Hanuman Ansh Surprise Audiences
Border 2 has also emerged as one of the year's major winners. The war drama
benefited from the popularity of the original film, nostalgia and strong
audience interest. It has crossed the ₹350 crore mark in India according to
current trade lists, making it one of Bollywood's biggest releases of 2026.
Another fascinating success is Hanuman Ansh. Made on a surprisingly small
budget, the film became a phenomenal word-of-mouth success. Current estimates
put its India collection above ₹300 crore. Its journey is a reminder that a
film does not always need a giant star cast or an enormous production budget to
make a huge impact. A strong story, audience connection and positive word of
mouth can sometimes matter much more.
Franchise Power
Still Matters
Mirzapur The Movie has also performed strongly, carrying the popularity of the
hit streaming series into cinemas. With more than ₹230 crore collected in India
in current trade estimates, it has shown that a familiar entertainment brand
can successfully bring streaming audiences back to theatres.
Bhooth Bangla and Dhamaal 4 have added another layer to the year's success
story. Both films benefited from comedy, recognizable brands and
audience-friendly entertainment. Dhamaal 4 in particular opened well and
crossed the ₹90 crore worldwide mark within its first few days, underlining the
continuing appeal of comedy on the big screen.
The Flops and
Disappointments
While the hits have been huge, 2026 has also delivered some painful
disappointments. Several films with substantial budgets and recognizable names
have failed to make a strong theatrical impact. Toxic, although not a
traditional Bollywood production, is an interesting example of how expectations
can be very different from the final box-office result. Its Hindi version has
collected over ₹140 crore, but current trade verdicts classify its overall
theatrical performance as losing.
Haiwaan has been an even tougher story. Despite a cast featuring established
names and a reported budget of around ₹130 crore, the film earned only a small
fraction of that investment. Its weak performance has once again raised
questions about remakes and whether audiences are willing to accept familiar
stories without a fresh reason to return to theatres.
What 2026 Tells
Us About Bollywood
The biggest lesson from the 2026 box office is that audiences are becoming
selective. Star power alone is no longer a guarantee of success. Films that
offer an event-like theatrical experience, strong stories or an established
emotional connection are finding audiences, while expensive movies without
enough excitement are struggling.
The numbers also show that mid-budget and low-budget films can surprise the
industry when viewers genuinely connect with them. Hanuman Ansh is perhaps the
clearest example. At the same time, sequels and established franchises continue
to dominate the biggest-grossing positions.
With the final quarter of 2026 still underway, the box-office race is far from
over. New releases could change the rankings before the year ends. For now,
however, Dhurandhar 2 remains the undisputed champion, while Hanuman Ansh
stands out as the year's biggest surprise. The hits, misses and unexpected
turns have made 2026 one of the more fascinating years for Bollywood audiences
and trade watchers alike.
